42 Tokyo: Japan’s Epicentre of Tech Education

3 min readDec 19, 2023

Discover 42 Tokyo, an educational oasis in the heart of Japan’s vibrant capital.

The bustling metropolis of Tokyo is not just Japan’s capital but also one of the world’s most populous, with over 14 million residents. Tokyo is a vibrant blend of the traditional and the ultra-modern: starting as a fishing village, it stands today as Japan’s economic centre, the seat of its government and the Emperor. The city has undergone a miraculous transformation to become a global economic powerhouse, home to dozens of the world’s largest companies. Renowned for its livability and as a financial hub, Tokyo’s rich history and dynamic present provide an inspiring backdrop for 42 Tokyo’s innovative education model.

42 Tokyo is nestled in the heart of the city. This position allows students and candidates to experience one of the most iconic cultures on Earth: from the welcoming hospitality to the world-class dining scene, visiting Tokyo is unforgettable.

“Living in Japan is a blessing. Some students code while wearing cosplay! The working culture is strong here and we truly believe that some of the best CTOs in the years to come will come from 42 Tokyo.”
Anthony Colas, Pedagogical Director of 42 Tokyo

42 Tokyo opened on June 22nd, 2020, and is primarily sponsored by DMM.com. Although Japan does not have a strong internship culture, it is easy to find a job, whether part-time or full-time. At the moment, the campus is working hand-in-hand with some of the most famous Japanese companies in the world. For example, thanks to their internal system called “Road”, students are invited to work on special company projects (DMM, Mixi, CyberAgent, Mercari). If they manage to complete them, they are invited to skip the first rounds of interviews at the respective companies. 42 Tokyo is also holding a minicar battle contest with Toyota: students programme a minicar to self-drive and do the best time on a specific track.

42 Tokyo is now located in Nishi-Shinjuku, in the heart of Tokyo, with a capacity of 1,000 students. The campus is adjacent to a beautiful park where students can enjoy cherry blossom picnics in spring or play basketball during their breaks. Just 15 minutes from Shinjuku Station — the busiest train station in the world — 42 Tokyo’s location offers both convenience and inspiration. It’s an ideal environment for students to grow, collaborate, and develop into the next generation of top engineers in Japan.

“Why is my campus the best one? 42 Tokyo is at the centre of the city. Do I need to say more?”
Anthony Colas, Pedagogical Director of 42 Tokyo
